GERI PROJECTS - Page 4

International Law:  Environmental & Health Public Policy

·        GERI delivered services focused on integrating U.S. grassroots delegations into international policy venues, shaping policy advocacy and promoting global networking.  Issues include environment, natural resources, fair labor and trade, globalization, public and community health.

·      GERI provided technical assistance to U.S. activists at official preparatory meetings, in Bali, Indonesia and New York City, and during three key international events:  (1) the 2001 World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa; (2) the 2002 World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil; and (3) the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.

·        GERI assisted in developing a global networking project, which convened South Asian and North American social justice and environmental lawyers and advocates in a dialogue about legal and public health issues, transnational environmental enforcement and oversight, and collective strategies that address the impacts of globalization on sustainable development.

·        GERI provided technical assistance, meeting planning and agenda development services to convene international meetings held in Sariska, India, involving participants from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, the United States and Mexico; and a meeting, held in Kathmandu, involved Nepalese grantee organizations of the Ford Foundation.

·        GERI is a consultant to the Forum for Justice on the South Asian Judicial Interaction on Environmental Justice and Equity, an event in Kathmandu, Nepal in the summer of 2004, that will convene participant judges across the region for sessions ranging from statutes, jurisdiction and the implications of multilateral agreements to environmental infrastructure, gender, intellectual property rights of indigenous peoples, and biotechnology.
